History of A. Altman Co.

The A. Altman Company was founded by Alvin Altman in 1957. The company is based in Canton, Ohio, with satellite offices in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Park City, Utah. Prior to 1957, Alvin was successful in the family furniture business. He had a keen business sense and an eye for opportunity. Entering the real estate development business, Alvin Altman built his credibility and confidence one deal at a time through hard work, intelligence and integrity.

Alvin secured a deal to build multiple buildings for NCR. The relationship with NCR resulted in 12 buildings throughout Ohio and Michigan, and propelled the A. Altman Company into a prominent role in the real estate development market.

A second generation of Altman success joined the company in 1964. Robert Altman was running a successful housing development company when he merged with his father in developing commercial real estate. Together, they furthered the growth and success of the A. Altman Company, securing deals with companies such as W.T. Grant and Prudential Life Insurance.

Richard and Louis Altman joined the company in 1986 and 1991 respectively, as the third generation of leadership. The company has become a true regional leader in the industry with projects in several states east of the Mississippi River and some projects further west.

Richard Altman is involved in every aspect of the business. He has developed extensive knowledge in all areas which include leasing, construction, financing and development. It is his unique ability to understand both sides of a transaction that has enabled him to become so respected in the industry.  Richard attended and graduated from The Ohio State University. Following his interest in real estate, he received his degree from the Business School majoring in Real Estate and Urban Analysis. Richard is involved in several community boards and enjoys golfing, flying and attending his children’s sporting events. Richard resides in Canton, Ohio with his wife Bobbi and his children Molly, Madison and Alvin.

Louis Altman joined the A. Altman Company full time in 1991 upon his graduation from The Ohio State University. Having grown up in the business, it was a natural progression while attending The Ohio State University to earn a degree from the School of Business majoring in Real Estate and Urban Analysis. Louis is involved in all aspects of the real estate business which includes leasing, construction, financing and development. In addition to his duties at the A. Altman Company, Louis currently serves as a Director for Home Savings Bank (HSB).  Prior to his position with Home Saving Bank Louis was Chairman of the Board for Premier Bank & Trust (PB&T), and was intimately involved in the acquisition by HSB.  Louis is currently active on several other community boards and enjoys snow skiing and golfing when time allows.  Louis resides in Canton, Ohio with his wife Christy and his two daughters Abby and Lilly.

The company was named a Weatherhead School of Management Family Firm of Distinction in 2001 and continues the legacy left by Alvin Altman. The principles that make the company a success today are the same as they were in 1957: Honesty, Integrity and Hard Work.

The A. Altman Company is a full service development company providing build to suit solutions for retail, office, medical office and the hospitality and apartment industries.
